Don’t Miss the Holiday Breakfast & Walk

Mark your calendars for festive holiday fun on December 7. Plan to start your day with a delicious breakfast for only $5! 55 Years of Service: Our Amazing Emergency Squad

55 Years of Service: Our Amazing Emergency Squad

55 Years of Service: Our Amazing Emergency Squad

By Diane M. Loeffler

On the afternoon of September 25, the SCC Emergency Squad held a party with cake and coffee to celebrate 55 years of helping others. What an accomplishment!

Did you know that our Emergency Squad is the only volunteer squad in the entire state of Florida? Literally, around the world people have asked how Sun City Center has managed to establish and successfully run an emergency squad that provides free services to area residents. Representatives from as close as The Villages to as far away as China have toured the Squad and inquired as to how they might establish a similar service.

During the September celebration, Megan Nixon, a representative of Commissioner White, presented Emergency Squad Chief Mike Bardell with a framed letter of Commendation reading in part, “on the occasion of its 55th anniversary of providing high quality emergency services to the Greater Sun City Center community, a model of Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”

Since John Bowker has the longest tenure of anyone, he and his wife, Linda, were given the honor of joining Megan Nixon in cutting the first piece of cake.

Many training items were on display. Ted Adamczyk demonstrated how to perform CPR on an adult and on a baby. The dummies he used are equipped with lights that clearly let you know if the depth or the speed of your compressions is right.

Would you be interested in taking a class in CPR, fall prevention, or stopping the bleed? Contact Karen Shirley Bardell, Assistant Chief of Education and Medical at 633-1411. Whenever there is sufficient demand, classes will be offered. You don’t have to volunteer for the squad to take them.

If you have a walker, wheelchair or other mobility device you no longer need, you may donate the items to The Emergency Squad. The Squad’s maintenance people sanitize, repair and service these items. Area residents may then borrow them as needed.

The Emergency Squad has grown from 14 individuals trained in first aid back in 1964 to over 400 volunteers today. The growth has been amazing, but the squad still needs more people to volunteer and / or donate in order to continue to serve us all. If you are interested, stop by the Emergency Squad Training Center at 124 South Pebble Beach Boulevard at 6 p.m on the second Wednesday of every month or call 813 633-1411. No prior medical background is required to become a part of this amazing organization.

The Florida Aquarium Releases Sea Turtles

The Florida Aquarium Releases Sea Turtles

The Florida Aquarium’s Animal Response Team successfully released two green sea turtles back into the Atlantic Ocean at Matanzas Inlet.

“It’s always a great day when you get to see turtles go back into the wild after being rehabilitated. Izar holds a special place in my heart after all the treatment that he was given and with the amputation of his front right flipper,” said Dr. Lindsey Waxman, The Florida Aquarium’s Associate Veterinarian. “I am confident that Izar will do well in the wild with no issue. Marco was the smallest of the turtles when he came in, so it’s exciting to see this turtle rehabbed and ready to go back to the natural environment.”

The two sea turtles, Izar and Marco, arrived at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Apollo Beach on April 1, 2019, from Volusia County. The duo was found suffering from cold-stunning, which is when sea turtles are exposed to cold ocean water and air temperatures for an extended period, rendering them immobile since they are cold-blooded.

Cold-stunned turtles are unable to swim and can develop symptoms, including decreased heart rate, low blood circulation, and pneumonia. If they do not receive treatment, cold-stunned sea turtles can be susceptible to drowning, infections, predation, or boat strikes.

Upon intake, one of the sea turtles Izar had a puncture wound on its front right flipper, the injury has unknown origins. The turtle received a blood transfusion from one of the Aquarium’s other long-term patients Banner and its condition quickly improved. In the weeks following its care, Izar also received a CT Scan at Tampa General Hospital to get a better look at the injured flipper. Over time, The Florida Aquarium’s veterinary staff administered antibiotics in hopes of saving the flipper, but it was found that the injury was not healing correctly, and the flipper needed to be amputated. Izar has since completely recovered from surgery and can survive with no issue in the wild.

After a short period in rehab at The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center in Apollo Beach, Izar and Marco were cleared for release back into the wild by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the veterinary staff at the Aquarium.

Since opening earlier this year, The Florida Aquarium’s Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Center has taken in 14 sea turtle patients for care. Currently, the Center houses three species of turtle including loggerhead, green and Kemp’s ridley. Since opening in 1995, The Florida Aquarium has rescued hundreds of ill and injured sea turtles. Guest admission and memberships help support these rescue efforts along with generous donations.

Blossoms of Asia at Selby Gardens

Blossoms of Asia at Selby Gardens

Blossoms of Asia at Selby Gardens

By Kai Rambow

Stunningly beautiful with seemingly infinite varieties, orchids fascinate even people who don’t pay much attention to flowers.  Selby Gardens does a tremendous job of creating thematic displays showcasing orchids.

Blossoms of Asia showcases Asian orchids in a Japanese inspired setting in the conservatory.  Note: The bamboo and many other materials were harvested on the grounds. The beauty of the flowers is intoxicating; the calming effect of the Zen-like landscape garden is relaxing. It’s a wonderful, ascetic combination.

The Payne Mansion, once again, hosts part of the exhibition. Fabulously colored pages from old botanical reference guides are displayed.  Resplendent Japanese woodblock prints and paintings on vellum are also visually entrancing.  This should be of particular interest to any artists or craft enthusiasts.  Tip: Recommend catching a docent led tour in the mansion to learn more about the displays here.

Selby Gardens is a worthwhile destination and an especially rewarding one during their special themed displays. Blossoms of Asia runs until December 1.

Trip Tip: Mornings and weekdays should give you cooler temperatures and fewer people.  An early time will also give you the opportunity to revisit your favorite display before leaving.
